Stop the Virgens

Living in New York, I feel as if I have the responsibility to know what the hot new things to do in New York are.  I need to say I’ve been to the new hot restaurant in LES or I saw Sleep No More when it first came to New York,  and that I saw the Alexander McQueen exhibit when it was at the MET.  Well, I have another thing to add to the list---Stop The Virgens.  Yes-STOP THE VIRGENS! This is the new psycho opera by Karen O (lead singer of the YEAH YEAH YEAHS) and KK Barrett (production designer for ‘where the wild things are’, ‘adaptation’, ‘being john malkovich’-aka-everything weird and wonderful).

My roommate is in the show, so she was able to snag me an oh-so-impossible-ticket to the show last Friday.  I walked into St Ann’s Warehouse on a Friday night wearing my very cute mini black DVF skirt and my silk red top with some sensible red lips and some black combat boots.  Coming from Manhattan I felt very hip until…. I saw the crowd.  By looking around I knew I wasn’t as hip as I thought I was.  People in Brooklyn breathe, eat, and sleep HIP.

The show was a lot to take in. It’s a cast of about 40 women who start out in white wigs and very little to nothing white/nude coverings.  By the end, they are covered in blood. However, it is the journey from white to blood that is the most interesting.  Karen O acts as the mother hen and gives a mesmerizing performance showing off her talented writing and singing chops.  I wouldn’t call this the typical theatre or even the typical experimental theatre, but I would call it one of the best concerts and performance theatre I have seen in a while.  Come with an open mind and be ready to be blown away.

If you get a chance, put on your “hipster clothes” and head over to St. Ann’s Warehouse for 2 more performances. OCTOBER 21and 22!
